Research Infrastructures

Research Infrastructures (RIs) generate massive amounts of scientific data, forming the foundation for innovation, AI development, and cross-disciplinary research. RI-SCALE leverages this potential by integrating RIs with advanced Data Exploitation Platforms (DEPs), scalable compute environments, and AI frameworks to unlock the full value of research data.

By combining datasets, computing power, AI models, and a network of experts, RI-SCALE empowers RIs to transform raw data into actionable insights, scalable services, and societal impact.

Thematic Research Infrastructures

RI-SCALE brings together four thematic RIs across environmental and health sciences:

BBMRI-ERIC – Biobanking and Biomedical Resources

Focus: Biobanking for biomedical research, supporting precision medicine.
Data Holdings: Multi-center colorectal cancer cohorts (10 TB–2 PB); digital pathology repositories.
Use Cases: Colorectal cancer prediction with explainable AI; synthetic data generation for computational pathology.

Euro-BioImaging – Biological and Biomedical Imaging

Focus: Access to imaging technologies, training, and data services across 41 nodes in Europe.
Data Holdings: BioImage Archive (~350 TB), EMPIAR (~4 PB).

Use Cases: Foundational models for heterogeneous imaging data; AI-powered assistant for data discovery and analysis.

ENES – Climate Research

Focus: Climate projections, Earth system modelling, environmental risk assessments.
Data Holdings: CMIP6 repository (~20 PB), accessible via ESGF and THREDDS interfaces.
Use Cases: High-resolution downscaling of climate scenarios; anomaly detection in data usage.

EISCAT – Atmospheric Physics

Focus: Incoherent scatter radar measurements, ionospheric studies, near-Earth geospace.
Data Holdings: Historical radar data (>40 years), Dynasonde data, future EISCAT 3D datasets (100s TB–PB/year).
Use Cases: AI-supported scheduling of radar observations; space debris and anomaly detection.
