Founded in 1962 as the Istituto Universitario Superiore di Scienze Sociali by Bruno Kessler, the University of Trento has focused on building alliances and partnerships with Italian and foreign institutions and organisations. Since 1983 it has been a state university, with a statute that guarantees self-governance.
