EISCAT conducts ionospheric and atmospheric measurements, as an example EISCAT can observe effects of the aurora borealis or the northern lights. EISCAT operates in three countries: Finland, Norway and Sweden, and the facilities are located north of the Arctic circle. EISCAT is associated with their radar antennas, that are located outside Kiruna in Kasieniemi, Sweden; Sodankylä and Karesuvanto, Finland; Tromsø and Skibotn, Norway and in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. In Tromsø, EISCAT also has a combined ionospheric heating and short-wave radar facility.
