Credit Management System

This use case develops a Credit Management System for Data Exploitation Platforms (DEPs) that tracks and accounts for both resource usage and environmental impact. The goal is to support fair, transparent, and sustainable access models for DEP providers and users, with future integration into virtual access funding schemes.

Challenge

As DEPs scale and serve multiple national and international research projects, there is a growing need to manage and allocate resources fairly and efficiently. This includes not only traditional compute, storage, and network usage but also the environmental impact of those operations. A unified system is needed to track, quantify, and express this usage in the form of credits—laying the groundwork for future business models, such as virtual access and green computing incentives.

Methodology

  1. Design: Co-create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for DEP accounting in collaboration with both providers and users.

  2. Implementation: Connect the accounting system to underlying HPC, cloud, storage, and AI components.

  3. Metrics enrichment: Integrate environmental impact statistics (e.g., energy consumption, emissions).

  4. Validation: Use real scientific use cases to test and calibrate the consumption and crediting model.

  5. Feedback loop: Incorporate findings into future provisioning and access plans for DEPs.

Goal

To implement a system that accurately accounts for both resource consumption and environmental impact in DEPs and expresses this information through a credit-based model.

Relevance

  • DEP providers: Gain tools to manage and allocate resources transparently, encourage sustainability, and support funding models.

  • DEP users: Benefit from predictable, fair access to resources and clarity on their environmental footprint.
